So, it's 10pm on a Saturday night...and what is Trish doing??? Trish is trying to learn Korean! I can be such a loser haha! Anyway, I really have no clue what I'm doing. I was totally excited the other day when I went to the library and signed out 3 books on learning Korean. Then I thought it would be helpful to get a Korean-English dictionary. $65 later I had my dictionary, along with a book about learning my First 100 Words in Korean, Frommer's South Korea guide, and a book titled I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell, which has nothing to do with South Korea but it damn fucking hilarious! I highly recommend it!
But I'm getting off track here. Have any of you ever tried to learn a language that isn't romanized??? This is some hard shit. Thank God I still have 5 months before I actually have to put it to use! Once you learn all the syllables and figure out which consonants go to the right and which go on the bottom, and blah blah blah...you learn that l's and t's actually sound like n's, k's sound like ng's, and p's sound like m's. Are you friggin serious?? King Sejong must have had something good in his hookah when he demanded a Korean writing system!
But alas, I shall continue to try and learn this lovely and complex language in which I will soon be immersed! Wish me luck!

Good luck, that's not an easy language to learn. Maybe get a Rosetta Stone set or something.
ReplyDeleteOr try Craigslist, there's always people who don't speak english who will teach you their language in return. You just trade off.
